Depuis 2008, The Last Drop propose certains des meilleurs spiritueux au monde aux connaisseurs et aux collectionneurs. Dans le même esprit de découverte, Ben Howkins - une autorité renommée sur le porto - a longtemps soutenu qu'un vieux porto Tawny vraiment excellent pouvait occuper une place aux côtés d'esprits aussi estimés. En 2016, ils se sont donc rendus dans l'une des plus anciennes régions viticoles du monde : la vallée du Douro, au nord du Portugal.
La 11e version de The Last Drops comprend deux très vieux Portos Tawny, datant de 1870 et 1970. Alors que le plus ancien était fabriqué à partir de raisins sur des vignes pré-Phyllorexa, le plus jeune provenait de vignes greffées sur des racines américaines après que le pou ait anéanti d'énormes étendues du vignoble européen. En tant que telles, les deux bouteilles extraordinaires offrent une occasion rare de goûter à deux chapitres radicalement différents de l'histoire du Porto.

NOTES DE DÉGUSTATION DE NEAL MARTIN : Il a un bouquet saisissant avec des parfums de prune noire, de sirop d'églantier, de miel de Manuka, de figue et de noix grillée… Magnifiquement équilibré, frais et de texture légèrement visqueuse, c'est un complexe Tawny Port dont l'âge n'a pas diminué à quel point il est délicieux. Il offre de magnifiques notes de mûre, de clou de girofle, d'eau-de-vie et de cinq épices chinoises tout au long de sa finale harmonieuse et posée. C'est juste un sublime Tawny de classe et de pedigree et il est fortement recommandé. 97 Points.
NOTES DE DÉGUSTATION DE JANCIS ROBINSON Nez de caramel à la mélasse et de beurre salé avec le palais le plus délicieusement riche, sucré et d'écorce d'orange séchée. Super truc! Très doux en bouche et remarquablement propre, compte tenu de son âge, sans excès et juste ce qu'il faut d'acidité rafraîchissante pour la douceur épaisse et légèrement relevée. Bravissimo ! Très long. 19/20

NOTES DE DÉGUSTATION DE NEAL MARTIN : Arômes de clou de girofle, de caramel anglais, de fenouil sauvage et de fumée. La bouche est douce et croquante à l'attaque avec une saveur de marmelade d'orange de Séville et de coing. Il y a une grande tension ici grâce à la fine couture d'acidité avec une finale fraîche, presque «zippée» qui dément son âge. Une belle Colheita Tawny. 93 Points.
NOTES DE DÉGUSTATION DE JANCIS ROBINSON : Tawny gingembre pâle avec un bord jaune-vert - beaucoup plus pâle que le 1870. Un riche beurré sort du dessous du nez. Puis, en bouche, une richesse très satisfaisante recouverte d'écorces d'agrumes et d'une acidité rafraîchissante en finale. C'est certainement un exploit pour un port fauve de donner autant de plaisir à près de 50 ans. Beaucoup plus riche et concentré que le tawny moyen vendu à 30 ans. Bien choisi ! 17.5/20.
