Bowmore Distillery has stood on the shores of Loch Indaal, a sea loch that opens out into the Atlantic Ocean, since 1779. The distillery's proximity to the sea plays a vital role in shaping the final character of the spirit, which breathes in the salty sea air all the while it's maturing. Complex yet perfectly balanced, Bowmore 12 Year Old has received much critical acclaim and reflects the raw essence of Bowmore - thrashing waves, windswept landscapes and generations of tradition.
Bowmore 12yo has a place in many hearts as Islay's 'medium-peated' malt. A pronounced iodine character with plenty of pepper, the current 12yo bottling is a welcome return to the classic Bowmores of the 1960s and '70s, with the emphasis on tropical fruit and smoke. Founded over two centuries ago in 1779, Bowmore is the first recorded distillery on Islay (pronounced ‘eye-la’) and one of the oldest in the whole of Scotland. Islay malts are renowned for their peaty smokiness and Bowmore is no exception.
Tasting Notes:
Colour: Warm Amber
Nose: Coastal smoke and ash soon make way for bergamot, orange zest, lemon slices and some hay before becoming rather floral, heather smoke now competing with the ash.
Taste: Warm and delicious with subtle dark chocolate, and rounded oily sweetness, honeyed vanilla, with a touch of smoke and hints of dark peat.
Finish: Remarkably long and complex
