First released at the Feis Ile 2012, Laphroaig Cairdeas 2020 Port & Wine Casks is a no-age statement release for the Friends of Laphroaig. Its release coincides with what would have been the 2020 Fèis Ìle (Islay Fest), which was cancelled due to COVID-19. This single malt is a marriage of classic Laphroaig whisky rested in second-fill Ruby Port "barriques" along with whisky double matured in ex-bourbon barrels followed by ex-red wine casks. Bottled at 52% ABV without chill-filtration.
Cairdeas means "friendship" in Gaelic.
Laphroaig Cairdeas Single Malt Whisky Port & Wine CaskTasting Notes:
Color: A distinctively rosy hue showing off its winey provenance.
Aroma: Rich and creamy toffee, with a touch of light beery coulis and, of course, a kick of tarry, medicinal Laphroaig smoke: burning pine. Minty dark chocolate develops. Ashy smoke hides at the back with fudgy sweetness, and a touch of bitter lemon pith and peel.
Mouthfeel: Thick and oily in texture with a delay before impact
Palate: Peat, lemon and sour berries. A big whack of burning pine rolls through the middle, followed by dark chocolate and a touch of singed raisin. The fudge sweetness and tar from the nose sit underneath, with hints of cherries and fruit cake.
Finish: Mint, menthol and anise lead to tar-covered sponge cake.
