Glenmorangie brings to the world the Spios (Scots Gaelic for ‘spice’, pronounced spee-oss), the 9th Private Edition release from the distillery.
The whiskey was inspired by Glenmorangie's Master of Distilling Dr. Bill Lumsden’s trips to the few Kentucky distilleries producing rye whiskey during the 1990s, several years ahead of the current resurgence in rye whiskey that has seen it become a staple pour behind bars around the world. Lumsden sourced the casks, which were made from handpicked slow-growth oak trees from the Ozark mountains of Missouri that were chosen for their porous structure. These casks were then scrupulously hewn, coopered, aged and toasted.
Spios is the first single malt fully matured in American ex-rye whiskey casks.
The 46% abv, non-chill-filtered expression is a full-bodied, savory single malt which brings to mind American rye whiskey’s golden age. Spìos features notes of cherry, clove and scents of green grass on the nose, while the rye’s spice bursts onto the palate, as toffee, clove and cinnamon mingle with buttery vanilla, before a sweet and lingering finish.
Color: Light Gold
Aroma: Fresh and herbal nose, hinting at cherry, clove and mint toffee, followed by scents of green grass. A splash of water releases more perfumed notes, both crisp and clean – and an inviting complexity of herbal tones
Taste: Rye’s characteristic spice bursts forth, as tastes of toffee, clove and cinnamon mingle with nutmeg and sweet, buttery vanilla
Finish: The finish is rich, sweet and lingering, with toffee and Brazil nut emerging alongside a citrus tang
A highly collectible and limited edition product for connoisseurs.
