Traditionally, Big Peat is classified as a “Vatted” Malt Whisky.
But what exactly is a Vatted Malt? It is what the Scotch Whisky industry has traditionally called “a marriage of Malts”. Similar to a "Single Malt" (blended malts from a "single" distillery) Big Peat contains malt whisky ONLY from the Islay distilleries of Caol Ila, Bowmore, Ardbeg and Port Ellen.
Big Peat is a feisty Islay character that a sweet side too – ‘he’ carries a big peaty (“phenolic”), beachy, oceanic, rather ashy selection of malts only from the island of Islay. It's not chill filter – and you will detect a massive amplification of sea-faring qualities on the nose, palate, and finish.
In addition to the 2014 Drammie Award for Best Blended Whisky, Big Peat has received accolades from all over the World since being introduced in 2009. The Malt Maniacs awarded it “Best Peated Whiskey/ Daily Dram”; Whisky Magazine awarded it “Best Vatted Malt Scotch Whisky”; and it won "Young Whisky - Gold Medal ” at the International Whisky Competition in Chicago.
