Speyside

The region with the largest concentration of whisky producers

Speyside Single Malts are single malt Scotch whiskies distilled in Strathspey, the area around the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland.

With so many whiskies, there are few similarities across the region, though some of the whiskies which are considered to be the most refined and elegant are in Speyside.

The Speyside malts are the sweetest whiskies. Although they do not have as much body as some Highland malts, their flavours are richer and more complex with fruity, leafy and honeyed notes and a subtle delicacy of aroma which, once recognised, should be easy to identify.

Strathspey has the most distilleries of any of the whisky producing areas of Scotland.

Glenfarclas 40 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

There aren’t many 40-year-old Scotches out there. This one makes its age known with a deep nut-brown color and a modest booziness on the nose, in addition to deep toffee, cocoa and hazelnut aromas. Oak is the dominant flavor, finishing with dry cocoa and leather accents. Water helps tease out additional orange peel, nutmeg and toasted coconut tones. Velvety feel.Glenfarclas has a proven track record for aging very well. I’ve enjoyed some amazing 25 and 30 year old expressions, in addition to some older vintage offerings. Does this new 40 year old follow suit?

Craigellachie 13 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

On a rock overlooking the river Spey sits a distillery called Craigellachie. At night, when the moon is full, you can see the worm tubs glisten. These long snaking tubes cool the liquid and bring out a strong, meaty flavor. The result, a single malt that’s anything but smooth. Clove-studded baked apples. Sulphury cordite. Hefty, malty, mazy in the mouth. Bonnie Sweet, but with fire in its belly.

Craigellachie

The Craigellachie distillery was built in 1891, in Aberlour, Banffshire near the village of Craigellachie, by Craigellachie Distillery Co. Limited, a group of blenders and merchants led by Alexander Edward. Two years later (1893) it was incorporated as a limited company and in 1896 it was reconstructed as Craigellachie-Glenlivet Distillery Ltd.

The Glenlivet XXV

The XXV is a batch-produced whisky finished in individually selected ex-sherry butts. The Oloroso-soaked oak imparts a nutty spiciness and enriches the flavour of the expression. Each cask is individually monitored in the finishing process to ensure only the subtlest sherry tones are added to this intense, silky and elegant whisky.
