The folks at Utah's High West Distillery consider whiskey an indispensable part of making it through the long cold winter, and one taste of A Midwinter Nightâs Dram alongside a cozy fire will surely transport you to a dreamlike state.
This limited release whiskey is a sumptuous marriage of the distillery's Rendezvous Rye finished in both port and French oak barrels. The rye forms a beautiful base of vanilla, caramel and cinnamon; the port barrels enhance with plums and dried fruits; the French oak provides a spice accent. In short, A Midwinter Nightâs Dram tastes like a proper Christmas plum pudding with lovely mulling spices, dried fruits, and crème anglaise.
So good ladies and gents, gather âmongst thy family and friends, and raise thy glass to winters that are "Swift as a shadow, short as any dream; Brief as the lightning in the collied night." - Lysander, A Midsummer Nightâs Dream, Act 1, Scene 1, Wm. Shakespeare
Lysander describes how quickly true love can vanish. When you drink this whisky, this is no doubt how you will feel. But savored slowly, A Midwinter Nightâs Dram will help you through the coldest night.

As always, the base HW Rye is phenomenal on it's own and presents with power here. So, layer the rich wine on top and it becomes sublime. Cinnamon and mint lead with some other herbal notes from the rye. Plums, grape jelly, and fig from the port. Very long and spicy finish with a subtle sweetness that balances really well.
There is room for a bit more port expression as in some past Acts but I like letting the Rye stand out too. Also, the aroma is a bit closed compared to the flavor, but leaves a beautiful sandalwood and cinnamon candy as it dries.
An overall wonderful dram that I will enjoy for as long as I can make it last.

Not hot, or spicy just an attempt at a clever title. On the nose a little floral, with with the sweet wine aroma bringing up the end. On the palate up front rye spice with a little bit astringent, and raisin and leather bringing up the rear. All in all a good pour. Itâs up to you on weather or not itâs worth the money.
