Glenmorangie Bacalta -- the eighth and latest release in the award-winning Glenmorangie Private Edition Series -- is a single malt whisky finished in Malmsey Madeira wine casks.
These casks were baked under the sun, emptied, shipped to Scotland, and then filled with specially selected spirit already matured in ex-bourbon barrels. This extra step adds layers of sun-baked sweetness to the whisky.
Glenmorangie, which first opened in the mid-1800s, is located in Scotland's Highlands whisky region. The distillery is known for having the tallest stills in Scotland, which stand close to 17ft tall.
The Glenmorangie Private Edition Series, which began in 2010, comes out with new, limited edition whiksys every year -- each with a unique flavor. The 7th edition, Glenmorangie Milsean is a dessert whisky influenced by confectioner's shops, with sweet candied fruit flavors. In contrast, the 6th edition, Glenmorangie Tùsail, uses a carefully-selected parcel of high-quality Maris Otter barley for rich, rustic malty flavors.
